Module 2 – Holy Spirit Encounter

Thanks for signing up for Module 2 – Holy Spirit Encounter. Here’s a brief intro video to acquaint you with the topic, and then a brief summary of the format we will be following.

Flip Classroom – Teaching Format

The format for these modules is what they call “flip-classroom.” Normally in a class you go to the lecture and then you do the homework assigned. A “flip classroom” style is exactly the opposite. The teaching is pre-recorded and you listen to it first as your homework, then you come to your online class and discuss what you’ve watched, ask questions and breakout into groups for further prayer and application. Each module is spread out into four sessions and will include about 1.5 hours of homework between sessions in preparation for a 1.5 hour Zoom class or small group to discuss and pray into your findings. Your class preparation will consist of 2 things: 1) Watch video teaching segments, 2) Do tasks – Which will include a variance of Bible reflection exercises, Journal Entries, Activation exercises and missional responses. You will be committing to a minimum of 12 hours for each module. Of course, you can do more – but that should give you a feel for what is involved.

What will you need? You will need a computer that has access to internet and has a camera and a mic set up so you can participate online. We are asking you to get a journal, have a Bible and follow along with the handout that you will receive online.

Summary of the second module

Jesus walked this earth fully God and fully Man, yet also fully surrendered to the Holy Spirit. In fact, He modelled for us what it means to live the Spirit-filled life. Right before he was crucified He introduced His disciples to the Holy Spirit, and told them it was better if he left, so they could have the indwelling Spirit living in them and do greater things than He had done. Just like with us, the disciples did not really understand the importance of the Holy Spirit until they experienced His outpouring at Pentecost. Jesus gave them the Great Commission, telling them to go and make disciples of all nations, but He also stressed that without the Spirit’s power they could not do this. They were to wait for the empowerment before setting out. In module 2, we take time to understand what it means to be Spirit-Empowered. What is hindering us from being filled with the Spirit and moving into the abundant life Jesus promised us. There will be times of teaching, personal reflection, small group sharing, and then we will take time to pray and invite the Spirit to fill those who want prayer.

Preparation for Session 1

Theme – Understanding Spirit-Empowerment – follow along on pages 1-7 of notes

We will examine the Bible’s teaching of how Jesus journeyed into Spirit-empowerment, how he then called His disciples into a similar journey, and explore the implications for us today.

We will explore the various barriers and hindrances that keep us from moving out into the fullness of God’s Spirit, and learn how we can overcome them.

Preparation for Session 3

Theme – Being Filled with the Spirit – follow along on pages 13-15 of your notes

We will investigate what the Bible teaches about the filling of the Spirit, and hear testimonies both old and new of those who have been filled by God’s Spirit. We will learn how to receive the filling of the Spirit and take time in class to pray to that end.

5. As the Lord leads you, consider participating in a fast to increase your hunger for God.
